Ever wonder why round faced people are more hearty and confident and yet people with longer faces seem to have to work harder at it?  Well behavioural genetics indicates that in general there are facial traits which are typical to certain personality types or attributes.

The legs of the matter

The legs of the matter

Long legs vs Short legs!

You may not believe it, but ask your long-legged friends if they prefer to stand while waiting or sit down!   While our legs certainly don’t follow as a face trait, they are a part of our genetic coding and it is really interesting to be aware of this trait.

Exerting Power

Exerting Power

In non-verbal communication space = power, thus the more of your body you are exposing the more power you are displaying.  Think back to our caveman ancestors, if you were crouched in a corner your enemy would not hesitate to conquer you but the person who stands with hands on hips showing total vulnerablity and yet exerting full power is more intimidating.

What's it all mean?

What's it all mean?

Before we get started on discussing specifics on non-verbal communication let's put out some definitions to help you better understand the language that is connected to this discipline.

Non-verbal communications is the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless (mostly visual) cues between people.  It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as body language (kinesics), in truth non-verbal communication encompasses much more. Many of these disciplines are increasingly based on scientific research and analysis such as the use of voice (paralanguage), touch (haptics), distance (proxemics) and includes our physical environment and appearance.  There is a correlation between non-verbal communication and meta-communication.

Communicate without saying a word

Communicate without saying a word

We all do it, we all see it, we all recognise it and yet we're mostly not aware that we do it, see it or consciously understand it, and that is non-verbal communication or often called body language.  I prefer the term non-verbal communication as we convey communication with our breathing, voice, eyes, legs, hands, mouth nose ... basically every part of us communicates if we are prepared to look and listen.

It's been a topic that I've been interested in for many years and I'll be sharing some of this information and how it can help you in business and life.
